Metals

GOLD

Pure gold is, in itself, a very soft metal. It is mixed with other metals (eg. silver, zinc and copper) to increase its strength and durability). The result is called an alloy.

The price of gold is determined by its carat weight. 24ct being pure gold, 18ct is 75% gold (hallmarked 750), 14ct is 58% gold (hallmarked 580) and 9ct gold is 37.5% gold (hallmarked 375) The price of gold increases in proportion to its carat weight; and at the moment the price of gold is high due to its popularity.

WHITE GOLD

White gold is produced by mixing gold with silver. The whiteness is determined by the amount of silver added. White gold has a warmer tinge than platinum. White gold was very popular in the 1920’s when it was developed as an alternative to platinum.

PALLADIUM

Palladium is a naturally white, precious metal from the same family as Platinum. It will never tarnish or change colour. It is 40% lighter and around 12.6% harder than platinum and is also hypoallergenic. It is similar in price per gram to 14ct white gold but is much cheaper as it is lighter in weight. The unit cost of palladium is much less than platinum. A manufacturers stamp will signify the metal until a hallmark becomes available later this year.

PLATINUM

Platinum is one of the hardest wearing and durable of all metals. Consequently it will never wear down as gold sometimes can, so it will remain virtually the same size and weight forever. It is much rarer, and almost twice as heavy, as gold. It is 90-95% pure and so it is the most expensive of all metals. It is ideal for sensitive skins as it is hypoallergenic.

TITANIUM

Titanium is grey in colour and extremely light weight and hard wearing. It can be mixed with other precious metals such as platinum, gold and silver. It is often used in the field of medicine as it is hypoallergenic and also on aircraft because of its strength and durability.
